उनकी पहली कमाई सिर्फ़ एक बोरी चावल थी, लेकिन कला ऐसी कि आगे चलकर पूरी दुनिया को पंडवानी का दीवाना बना दिया!
पद्म विभूषण तीजन बाई अब हमारे बीच नहीं रहीं। लंबे समय से बीमारी से जूझने के बाद उन्होंने AIIMS, रायपुर में 70 वर्ष की उम्र में अंतिम सांस ली। छत्तीसगढ़ के एक छोटे से गाँव में जन्मी तीजन बाई ने महाभारत की कहानियां अपने नाना से सुनीं और वहीं से पंडवानी के प्रति उनका प्रेम शुरू हुआ।
महज़ 12 साल की उम्र में उनकी शादी कर दी गई। लोगों के दवाब को नज़रअंदाज़ कर उन्होंने पंडवानी गाना नहीं छोड़ा, इसलिए उन्हें समाज से बाहर कर दिया गया। फिर भी, कला उनके लिए सबसे ऊपर रही।
उन्होंने इंग्लैंड, फ्रांस, जर्मनी, स्विट्जरलैंड, तुर्की, मॉरीशस समेत कई देशों में भारतीय लोककला का परचम लहराया। आज उनकी आवाज़ भले ही खामोश हो गई हो, लेकिन जब-जब पंडवानी की बात होगी, तीजन बाई का नाम सबसे पहले लिया जाएगा।
